LOVE AND BE LOVED is a weekend retreat located in Southern California for couples looking to enrich their relationship and be more equipped to love one another well.
Couples will learn what a healthy (or healing) marital relationship looks like versus that of an unhealthy (or hurting) marital relationship. They will be equipped with skills and tools to help them move towards each other in love and intimacy.
The teaching centers around 4 biblical principles, based on the work of Jack and Judy Balswick:
- Love and Be Loved
- Forgive and Be Forgiven
- Serve and Be Served
- Know and Be Known
The foundation of the 4 biblical principles is focused on God’s love for us and his love for the church (his bride) through Jesus Christ.
In the words of Timothy Keller, “We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” Believing this gospel messages enables us to love, forgive, serve and know our spouse.
We are able to love because of Christ’s unconditional love for us.
We are able to forgive because we’ve been forgiven.
We are able to serve because Christ served and gave up his life for us.
We are able to know our spouse because we are known intimately by God, in all our brokenness.
Couples will be exposed to top research in the field of marriage and committed relationships, such as that of Dr. John Gottman’s 40+ years of couple research, and gain wisdom from well-known pastors and authors, like that of Timothy Keller and Brene Brown.
What’s It Like?
The weekend will be a time of learning and equipping, as well as self-reflection, couple interaction and group discussion, where we hope these principles and tools take root. It will be a time to relax, connect with each other, be encouraged, be filled up with truth and good food, and leave with a renewed understanding of love and hope for your marriage.
The Love and Be Loved retreat shapes how we love and serve each other to this day! We are equipped with healthy practices and challenged to implement them when old habits rise back to the surface. It is truly a transformative time for couples of all life stages. God is redeeming marriages and relationships through this life-giving retreat. The three couples we referred left with “Aha!” moments and counsel that will undoubtedly shape their relationships for a lifetime.— Jane W., San Diego retreat
Sincerely, we can’t thank you enough for such an amazing weekend. It was just what we needed. The course content was spot on, but more importantly [to] us, your open sharing was profoundly impacting. Thank you for sharing–for letting us know you and for loving us all so well. You both have such gifts of hospitality and care for others. I pray we can somehow play a part in keeping your tanks filled as you continue in this amazing call to bless others!— Jonathon and Danielle K., San Diego retreat
The shame/blame discussion was extremely insightful and helpful. It provided me with a deeper understanding and tools for healthier relationship and better discussion. Keep up the great work! – Participant, San Diego retreat
